Today is World Mental Health Day a day that takes on new significance as we reach the seven-month mark of the COVID-19 pandemic in the United States. One in four people will suffer from a mental health problem, such as depression or anxiety, during any given year. Take some time today to focus on the mental health of you and your family members. Did you know swimming has many mental health benefits? Research has repeatedly shown exercise improves mood, increases self-estee...m, lowers the risk of depression, slows dementia and cognitive decline, improves sleep and reduces stress. Swimming, and being in water in general, has been proven to help with relaxation. The color blue, which often surrounds you in water, calms the psyche. Also, swimming engages all your senses which helps clear your mind. #worldmentalhealthday #exerciseisgoodforyou #swimforrelaxation #surroundyourselfinblue

January is National Bath Safety Month. Approximately 80 percent of infant drowning deaths happen in the bathtub, and children can drown in only an inch of water! Young children should have constant supervision by an undistracted adult during bath time. Here are a few suggestions on how to keep your child safe in the bathtub: Make sure you have everything you need before you get started: towels, soap, and toys should be within reach, so you never have to leave your child’s s...ide. Ignore phone calls, text messages and other distractions nothing is more important than supervising children in water. Test the water temperature with your elbow or wrist before filling the bathtub. The hot water heater should be set to 120 degrees F or cooler to avoid burns. Do not use bath seats or bath rings. They can easily tip over. If you are using an infant tub, make sure it is sturdy and in good working order. According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, there were 247 incidents involving infant bathtubs reported between Jan. 2004 and Dec. 2015, with 31 being fatalities. #bathsafetymonth #safetyfirst #safetytips #swimlessonssavelives #constantsupervision

Pool season may be fading from your mind, but now is the perfect time to start swim lessons. Year-round, half- hour weekly lessons help children build on what they learned over the summer, so they gain comfort in the water and strengthen their water safety skills. By giving your child a fun and active outlet like swimming in a safe environment during the colder months, you’ll find yourself with a better, safer and more confident swimmer when the warm weather returns. #swimlessons #swimyearround #watersafetyskills #poolseason2021

Halloween will look a bit different this year thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic. The CDC considers traditional trick-or-treating or trunk-or-treating to be high-risk activities, but with a little bit of creativity the holiday can still be special for children. Among the less risky suggestions offered by the CDC are a costume parade, carving or decorating pumpkins, a Halloween decoration scavenger hunt in your community, or having an outdoor Halloween movie night with family fr...iends spaced more than 6 feet apart. You can also fill treat bags to leave at the end of the driveway or edge of your yard for trick-or-treaters to grab as an alternative to having children crowded at the door to grab candy from a bowl. Do you have any special plans for the holiday? What will your family be dressing up as? Share with us in the comments!
