In Coleridge's wondrous ballad of "The ancient Mariner" we find a warm description: "Beyond the shadow of the ship I watch'd the water-snakes: They moved in tracks of shining white,... And, when they rear'd, the elfish light Fell off in hoary flakes. "Within the shadow of the ship I watch'd their rich attire Blue, glossy green, and velvet black: They coiled and swam, and every track Was a flash of golden fire." These indeed are lines whose brilliancy emulates the splendour of the phenomenon they depict, but even they are hardly more beautiful than Crabbe's admirable description: "And now your view upon the ocean turn, And there the splendour of the waves discern; Cast but a stone, or strike them with an oar, And you shall flames within the deep explore; Or scoop the stream phosphoric as you stand, And the cold flames shall flash along your hand; When, lost in wonder, you shall walk and gaze On weeds that sparkle, and on waves that blaze." An excerpt from The Sea and its Living Wonders, by George Hartwig [Pg 432] what a fabulous and insightful read and it’s all here: https://www.gutenberg.org/files/62011/62011-h/62011-h.htm #lockdownreading #learnsomethingneweveryday #thepowerofthesea #infinity #infinityandbeyond #everythinggoesbacktothesea #impermanence #capturethemomentcreatethememory #WaterIsLife #waterwearsrock #bioluminescence #KrisWilliams

Great podcast from Vladimir at Vladswim. His knowledge of our sport is pretty unique. We have had the pleasure to have met Vlad on a number of occasions namely on the North Irish Channel when Dean Swimmer successfully swam the North Channel, at the WOWSA conference in San Francisco and once again in action in Sydney coaching his team of impressive swimmers. He is always available to offer advice and not afraid to push swimmers beyond their limits. Vlad has the most suc...cessful record in the Southern Hemisphere for coaching swimmers to succeed on both the North Channel and English Channel. He is held in the highest respect by the Australian community of Open water swimming. Some of Vlads successful swimmers on the North Channel are *Colleen Mallon * Dean Summers * Rachael Hanisch * Martin Fillipowski * Pierre Lord Tune in and listen to the insights of the one and only Vlad! Great mindset, ideas and focus.

Today is my World Recordversary . 6 years ago I finished my 42 hour ordeal which was the longest solo, continuous ocean water swim in history. I could n...ot have done this without the support of my AMAZING team (see below). . This record still stands today after 2 unsuccessful challenges. It is ratified by the prestigious Marathon Swimmers Federation & by the iconic Guinness World Records. . My success came after 3 consecutive years of failures. In 2011 & 2012 I failed a triple non-stop crossing of the English Channel from what I now know was Swimming Induced Pulmonary Edema, otherwise known as SIPE (a life-threatening condition, which I was sent immediately to Emergency in hospital in 2011). . In 2013 I attempted to be the 1st person to swim unassisted 100+ miles b/w Cuba & Florida but I was swarmed with dozens of box jellyfish after just 11hrs of swimming. I even pulled a jellyfish tentacle out of my mouth. The swim finished with me screaming & then quietly whimpering in agony for hours on the boat on the way back to the USA. . You would think I would be over marathon swimming by then. I wasn’t. I had a sense of purpose & self- belief that I COULD be the best ultra-marathon swimmer in history. My failures were feedback that things were going wrong & needed changing. . With the support of my team, I re-grouped & adapted & came back securing the Ocean World Record in 2014 & FINALLY after 5 years of trying I became the 1st person in 25 years to swim a triple non-stop crossing of the English Channel in 2015. . The learning experiences from these & other failures & successes have helped me to coach 150 people to swim the English Channel. . I am starting a brand new coaching program soon. Keep watching this space if you would like me to personally support you to your marathon swimming dreams. . I owe my eternal thanks & gratitude to the team who were with me every stroke of the way during the WR- . The recipient of the 2019-2020 MSF Service to Marathon Swimming Award, recognizing outstanding contributions to the sport in a non-swimming role, is Phil White.... Phil was the leading nominee from a round of write-in nominations from the MSF membership earlier this year; the award was then confirmed by a unanimous vote of the MSF Core Team. Few open water swimming organizers have built so much -- from so little -- as Phil, founder of the Kingdom Swim, *In Search of Memphre*, "Swim the Kingdom" week, the Memphremagog Winter Swimming Festival, and the Northeast Kingdom Open Water Swimming Association. From his "Clubhaus" in the remote Northeast Kingdom of Vermont, Phil looked out on the iconic local lake (Memphremagog) and saw potential, despite the small population base and lack of community infrastructure for open water swimming. Starting with the 10-mile Kingdom Swim in 2009, Phil gradually expanded to a year-round programme of events: the Kingdom Games. By 2019, Kingdom Games supported 171 swimmers on 16 distinct marathon swims, as part of "over 30 days of running, biking, swimming, kayaking, speed skating, Nordic skating, and winter swimming events" involving over 1,500 athletes from around the nation and abroad. Bear in mind, the population of the entire *county* where Lake Memphremagog sits is only 27,000. In addition to event organizing, Phil has piloted and crewed on numerous solo swims, including Sarah Thomas' world-record setting 104-mile Lake Champlain swim. In his ambitious vision to create world-class open-water swimming opportunities in an improbable, landlocked location, Phil stands among the most powerful and consistent contributors to the sport over the past 10 years. To paraphrase a famous movie line: He built it, and they came. With deep respect -- congratulations, Phil! Karen Nazor

Thank you to Irish Country Living for this wonderful article . @visualfeasts for photos I love sharing my passion for adventure and open water, growing up in ...a fishing family, we were always made aware of the power of the ocean and the risks we take. As a child I spent so much time in the sea. I've been so lucky to have experienced the most insane swim extremes, and yet so blessed to have had the courage to take those chances. I've always wanted to be the best version of myself Im not someone who pushes for medals or accolades..it was always about being my own biggest fan. I'm genuinely so proud of what I have achieved, mostly balancing my life and adventures. I've always following my heart and really loved pushing into the abyss of extremes. That moment when you are exposed to your own judgement that is where the beauty lies. Back in 2012 the insanity of the risks we took were colossal, but the learning has allowed cold water swimming in world today to be possible. The ocean is one of the most amazing playgrounds. We are all the sum of the parts. Looking forward to sharing more of my adventures #worldfirsts #believe #courage #openwaterswimming '#extremeswims #lovelife #livingthedream #oceanrules #oceanenergy #teammmatters #safetyfirst #adventuregoals #dingle #dingleharbour #bestswimmingpool #andbreathe #iceswim #extremeadventurres #suuntoswimming #daretodream

As we all know, as temps drop, your body has to acclimate, so a 3 degree drop can be a big change. Stay safe in the coming months!

Dean Summers is our next inductee into the Australian Marathon Swimming Hall of Fame. Dean grew up in the working class suburb of Palmyra close to the port and... beaches of Fremantle, Western Australia. As kids, he and his two brothers and sister swam competitively in the Fremantle Swimming club. He claims to have spent more time at the beach than at school. At 16 Dean joined the merchant navy (which he refers to as the family business) and left Fremantle on his first ship, the MV Boogalla. The main focus at sea, he jokes, is to stay out of the water. He effectively didn't swim seriously for the next 37 years. Dean is a former elected official of the Seamen's Union of Australia which amalgamated in 1993 to become the Maritime Union of Australia, MUA. In 2000 Dean was invited to become the National Coordinator of the International Transport Workers Federation and moved to Sydney. The ITF represents and defends the world's 1.3 million seafarers. In 2013 Dean joined Vlad, a Sydney coach with a dedicated following of long-distance swimmers, and began his journey in the demanding international sport of open water marathon swimming. After two years training alongside some of the best long-distance swimmers in Australia, Dean swam the English Channel. In the next 12 months he went on to conquer the Catalina Channel and to circumnavigate Manhattan Island in New York. This is known as the Triple Crown of Open Water Swimming. Dean became the 137th person to achieve it. Dean now has his eye on the Oceans Seven, a near impossible series of seven international swims which test the bravery, strength, determination and resilience of anyone who comes close to it. Dean has six of the seven English, Catalina, North and Moloka’i Channel, the Strait of Gibraltar as well as the Cook Strait he plans to conquer the remaining one, The Tsugaru Strait, by 2020. The ocean is an endless source of energy, which I feel I can tap into under any conditions. It’s the ultimate element.
